Mikri Arktos

BOUTIQUE HOTEL - ΔΗΜΗΤΣΑΝΑ

The Hotel

Mikri Arktos enjoys a unique setting among the cobbled streets of the historic town of Dimitsana, offering privileged views over the Lousios Gorge and the plains of southeastern Arcadia. The building also holds significant historical importance, as it stands next to the Antonopoulos Museum. In the early 19th century, these buildings belonged to the Antonopoulos family and served as one of the first meeting places of members of the Filiki Eteria (Society of Friends), where preparations were made for the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821.

Later, until 1920, the building housed the Dimitsana Secondary School before passing into private ownership. When our family purchased the property 20 years ago, only the ground floor façade had survived. Under the close supervision of the Archaeological Service, the building was carefully restored and reconstructed in accordance with its original architectural design.

Ο Mύθος λέει ...

According to Greek mythology, Zeus was captivated by the beauty of Callisto, a priestess of Artemis and daughter of the King of Arcadia, and made her his lover. Enraged by their forbidden relationship, Artemis cast Callisto away. Alone in the mountains of Arcadia and carrying Zeus's child, she gave birth to Arcas beneath a plane tree. Consumed by jealousy and betrayal, Hera attacked Callisto. To save her, Zeus transformed her into a bear.

As Arcas grew older, he became a skilled hunter. One day, while hunting in the forest, he encountered his mother in her bear form and unknowingly prepared to kill her. To prevent this tragic act, Zeus transformed Arcas into a bear cub, allowing mother and son to recognize one another at last. To protect them from Hera's wrath, Zeus placed them both among the stars, appointing Arcturus as their guardian. From that moment on, Callisto became the constellation Ursa Major, the Great Bear that dominates the northern sky, while Arcas became Ursa Minor, the Little Bear.
